Starting Monday, 4th November, Chichester District Council will kick off an improvement project on the footpath running from Chichester Road to the paved area at the rear of the Spread Eagle.

What’s changing?
The existing footpath will be widened to better accommodate foot traffic and create a more spacious, open walkway. A wider pathway not only makes it easier for pedestrians, cyclists, and those with strollers or mobility aids to share the space but also enhances the overall flow of people past South Pond.
In addition to the widened footpath, a new, environmentally friendly surface will be laid down. The council is committed to minimising the environmental impact of this project. By choosing a surface material that requires less maintenance and is more sustainable, they aim to ensure the path remains both functional and aesthetically pleasing for years to come.
Why lift the paving slabs?
As part of this project, paving slabs in certain areas will be lifted to allow a deeper investigation beneath the surface. This examination will help council engineers better understand the structural makeup and any potential issues that might affect future developments in the area. It’s a proactive approach, setting the stage for additional improvements that could transform the entire paved area in the near future
If you have any concerns or comments please contact Chichester District Council directly.
How will this impact you?
The council aims to minimise disruption as much as possible. While some temporary closures or detours might be necessary, the council will provide clear signage and guidance to ensure pedestrians can navigate the area safely. Keep an eye out for updates and respect any posted notices to ensure the work proceeds smoothly.
